FIFA has approved the Ghana Football Association’s proposal to extend presidential term limits from two to three terms, clearing the path for incumbent Kurt Okraku to seek re-election.

The global body simultaneously elevated the women’s representative on Ghana’s Executive Council to Second Vice President a landmark move for gender inclusion in line with FIFA’s global directives.

The decision resolves a governance inconsistency where council members could serve three terms while presidents were capped at two. However, FIFA rejected other proposed reforms, including expanding Congress membership from 124 to 146 delegates and increasing the Executive Council from 12 to 22 members. Only the term-lift and gender-role amendments gained approval after a three-year review by the GFA’s Statutes Review Committee, chaired by Dr. Randy Abbey.

The changes now head to Ghana’s Congress on August 12 for ratification, requiring a three-quarters majority vote. While critics argue extended terms concentrate power, former GFA Communications Director Ibrahim Sannie Daara countered: “Two terms aren’t enough in football politics. Longevity determines success.” The mixed reforms spotlight tensions between modernization and entrenched influence in African football governance.
