The Dombo family has firmly rejected claims that it has thrown its support behind New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer aspirant and Member of Parliament for Abetifi, Dr Bryan Acheampong, describing such reports as inaccurate and misleading.

In a statement signed by Tracy Rabiatu Dombo and Alexandra Dombo Tenadu, the family reacted to a banner headline published by The Chronicle on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, which read: “Dombo Family Backs Bryan.” The family said the publication created a false impression that did not reflect its position on the NPP’s upcoming flagbearership contest scheduled for January 31, 2026.

“At no time has the Dombo family endorsed or supported Dr Bryan Acheampong in relation to the party’s flagbearership contest,” the statement stressed, adding that the headline did not represent the family’s “publicly stated position, convictions, or values.”

The family clarified that its stance has remained consistent and principled, emphasising leadership rooted in vision, character, and conviction. According to the statement, the family has openly declared its support for Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, based on what it described as merit, intellectual depth, resilience, and commitment to Ghana’s long-term development.

“Our support for Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has been clear and deliberate,” the family stated, warning that any attempt to suggest endorsement of another candidate amounted to a distortion of facts and a misrepresentation of its views.

Referencing its historical role in Ghana’s political tradition, the Dombo family said its legacy is anchored on integrity, inclusion, service, and sacrifice values it insisted are non-negotiable and cannot be repurposed to serve “transient political narratives or sensational headlines.”

The family further explained that its backing of Dr Bawumia is not influenced by personal relationships, material inducements, or sectional interests, but rather by a belief in leadership that prioritises ideas, competence, and substance.

The statement highlighted Dr Bawumia’s track record in economic management, digital innovation, and public sector reform, describing his leadership style as calm, thoughtful, and respectful of democratic institutions. It also noted that his approach aligns with the founding principles of the NPP, particularly inclusiveness and national cohesion.

“At a time when the party must reconnect with its grassroots and broaden its appeal, his leadership offers credibility, trust, and continuity of values,” the family noted.

The Dombo family expressed concern that The Chronicle headline risked misleading the public and party faithful by attributing to it a position it had neither discussed nor adopted. It called on the newspaper to correct the misrepresentation and urged greater editorial care, especially when dealing with established family names and political legacies.

The family concluded by reaffirming its commitment to contributing constructively to national discourse, guided by conviction, truth, and the broader interests of Ghana.
