President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has called on Ghanaian journalists to uphold the integrity of the electoral process by combatting misinformation and reporting with fairness as the country prepares for the 2024 general elections.
“A free and independent media is essential to a thriving democracy, and it is through their tireless work that Ghana continues to build and sustain its democratic foundations,” he said on Saturday, 28th September 2024, when he joined journalists at the 28th Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Media Awards, to celebrate 75 years of excellence in journalism.
The President also reaffirmed his government’s commitment to press freedom, “having repealed the Criminal Libel Law and passed the Right to Information Act, both of which empower the media to perform its critical function without fear of persecution.
“As I near the end of my presidency, I extend my heartfelt gratitude to Ghana’s journalists for their dedication, resilience, and courage. They have been an indispensable partner in our democratic growth.
“It was a moment to reflect on the indispensable role of the media in shaping our democracy, promoting transparency, and amplifying the voices of the people.”
