Ghana FA to crack down on betting companies over GPL matches

Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku says no betting company has been licensed to issue odds on Ghana Premier League (GPL) matches.

He revealed that the association’s legal team will soon contact betting companies that continue to include GPL matches in their offerings.

Okraku views this action as a crucial step in addressing ongoing concerns about match-fixing in the league. Last season, some match scorelines raised suspicions, prompting several betting companies to remove GPL games from their websites.

“We have not licensed any betting company to take odds on our games. We are going to empower our legal department to confront this issue head-on. It is not okay for betting companies to feed on our football.

“It is time to say no to such companies. We are open to doing it the legal way. We will invite companies who want to partner with us to speak to us,” Okraku said during the 30th Ordinary Congress in Prampram.

Okraku emphasised that GPL matches should not be included in betting markets, as no betting company has received approval.

His administration has taken a strong stance against match-fixing, evident from the demotion of Inter Allies and the indefinite suspension of AshantiGold due to match manipulation.

The Congress also marked the countdown to the new season, which begins on September 6.
